How to declare an app OK to open?

My question is about an app that I use every day (and have used for over a decade).  When I try to open the app in Sierra, I am told that Safari downloaded it from the internet and asked to confirm that I want to open it.  Is there a way to declare permanently that the app is safe so that Sierra will stop asking me?

Hey josephfromknoxville!

I hear you're looking to authorize access to a program installed through Safari. Let me see what I can do for you.

It sounds like you've already installed and launched this program in the past, but I still want to take a moment to highlight the potential risks that come with running unverified software:

In addition to apps, other types of files may not be safe. Scripts, web archives, and Java archives have the potential to cause harm to your system. Of course, not all files like this are unsafe, but you should exercise caution when opening any such downloaded file.

macOS Sierra: Protect your Mac from malware

With that covered, here are the steps you can take to change your Security & Privacy preferences, at your own discretion:

To override your security settings and open the app anyway:

  1. In the Finder, locate the app you want to open.

Don’t use Launchpad to do this. Launchpad doesn’t allow you to access the shortcut menu.

  2. Control-click the app icon, then choose Open from the shortcut menu.

  3. Click Open.

The app is saved as an exception to your security settings, and you can open it in the future by double-clicking it just as you can any registered app.

Note: You can also grant an exception for a blocked app by clicking the “Open Anyway” button in the General pane of Security & Privacy preferences. This button is available for about an hour after you try to open the app.

To open this pane, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Security & Privacy, then click General.

Hopefully this clears things up for you. Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities, and have a great day!
