Why is my mac slowing down at startup?

I've maxed out the RAM on my iMac, yet it seems to have slowed down ridiculously at startup. It typically takes 5 or more minutes before I can use it when I start it up. But once I am at work, I have no speed issues. Any ideas?

Also, after using for it for just a few minutes, the case really heats up. When I put it in sleep mode, it cools down almost instantly. The reason I post is that both of these issues have popped up only recently I would say... in the last year or so.

How many apps do you have launching at start up? Check in System Preferences > Users & Groups > your user > Startup Items.

Try also Safe Boot mode by holding down the Shift key at startup. Safe Boot is quite slow because the OS performs a bunch of cleanup and verification tasks, so give it time. After you're completely logged in, restart normally.
