Access Time Capsule Wirelessly?

Had Time Capsule years ago which I backed up to over wifi. Then it died, so I backed up to USB volume.

Now I've acquired another TC but can't seem to do wifi backups. I can connect via Ethernet and back up the initial (long) backup that way, but when I configure the wireless parameters in Airport Utility (the old version using old Mac with Snow Leopard) and select wireless mode "join a wireless network" (hold down Opt key when clicking on this drop-down field) and reboot both the TC and Mac, it won't work.

I choose "Back up now" from the TM menu, I see the TC volume mount in Finder, and in TM Preferences I see the TC volume name, and under "Backing Up: the status starts "Making the volume available" (or something like that" then the barber-pole progress bar and "Preparing 2 items..." which is where it sits forever.

I have several devices on this wifi network and never have any issues. I've tried setting the TC right next to the wifi router, 10 ft. away, and at the other side of the house; no change in the symptoms.

Can anyone else succeed with setting up the TC to back up wirelessly?
