Late 2009 iMac overheating, shutting down

I have a late 2009 iMac all-in-one in beautiful condition, I bought it used from a man who very rarely touched it (seriously still had all the original packing materials, manuals, discs) a few years back, I noticed it ran hot but some research assured me that was normal and I didn't think much of it. A few months later it started to over heat to the point of shutting down after very little use, quickly figured out that the hard drive was failing and replaced it.

It works beautifully, I never have any performance issues to speak of and I loved working on it, however the last two days I've been working on doing data entry work so I'd had google sheets open in one tab on safari, youtube running in the back ground tabs that had the data I was entering open. Yesterday I worked for probably 5-6 hours straight with youtube running in the back ground and safari going full bore before it suddenly shut down. I touched the upper left corner and realized it was ridiculously hot.

I left it off over night, turned it back on this afternoon and went back to the same work I was doing yesterday, again youtube running in the background but today it suddenly shut down after maybe an hour, hour and a half?

I would very much like to find a solution to this as it's a fantastic machine.

Any suggestions on how to make this computer run cooler so it stops shutting down on me?

Once the graphic's card is damaged by extreme overheating, then there is no real solution except to replace the graphics card or the computer.

You can help prevent the initial damage, premature damage or perhaps even prolong the life of a questionably graphics card by taking the following steps.

1. Periodically shutdown and vacuum off the bottom air intake grill to make sure that it is free of dust.

2. Monitor the internal temp. sensors using software like Mac Fan Control or HDD Fan Control.

3. Manually up the CPU/GPU fan speed or use the Sensor-Based control if it is overheating.
