Cracked 27" iMac Screen Repair Options?  (...

Hello all,

My iMac was the victim of a 3 year old's errant baseball throw.  It chipped the upper right corner of the screen and a crack has spread at a 45 degree angle about 6 inches deep toward the middle of the screen.  My computer works perfectly fine... but as you can imagine, the crack is an eyesore. 

I've done some research and found it to cost around $700-$800 bucks to have Apple fix it.  I can find the part with the toolkit to do it myself on eBay for around $450.  I'm handy and have replaced hard drives on older iMac's before so I'm confident I could do it myself. 

However, when searching for my iMac's specs, it took me to a support page and it told me I was still under warranty (until June 26th).   I do not have Apple Care... it's just the one year warranty that comes with all new purchases through Apple (I bought this unit as a refurb).

My questions are... will my warranty cover at least in part a cracked screen repair?  Or, I still have the option to purchase Apple Care for my unit.  Would Apple Care cover a repair like this?

Any thoughts or advice on this would be appreciated!

Warranty does not cover broken screens unfortunately.

Matt, Is it the glass or the LCD or both?  If you could, maybe you could post a few pix ( make sure they're close-up) I may be able to give you some directive.

Here's a picture of the damage... per the request of 'Ruben MZ' (for some reason I'm not seeing the replies here... but they're coming through in my email).  You'll notice a chip in the top left corner of the screen.  Then, if you look closely, you'll see the crack that has formed going toward the middle of the screen, just to the right of the Apple logo from the Apple Store receipt.

From what I understand just the glass can not be replaced, unlike older iMac models.  The LCD and glass are now one piece in these units and the entire LCD panel has to be replaced.   I'm just trying to figure out about what the cost would really be to have Apple repair the LCD panel for me at a retail location, with or without AppleCare.

Matt, You could do this yourself for and save a couple $.  I've looked at https://youtu.be/BYOtXlerXRM and https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iMac+Intel+27-Inch+EMC+2546+Display+Replacement/156 41.  It doesn't seem that difficult at all.  The tools, adhesive and replacement screen probably add up to $400-$600 depending on where you buy. Apple 's product especially Imac is the worst product in the world, easily to broken and the protection plan is useless too, not cover the screen but it produce the easiest broken screen. Not way for me to buy Apple's product anymore
