How can I connect external monitor using VGA in...

Not all adapters are created alike, I recommend using the Apple recommended one otherwise you will think it's something with your new iMac.

I tried to connect using such an adapter,  but the external monitor could not get a signal.  So it did not work.  What could be the problem?

think by default it would try to mirror your current display to the external monitor and vga not supporting very high resolutions would likely fail ant initialising click on the system preferences->display and click gather windows

and lower the resolution to something the older interface support

I just bought the Apple Lighting to VGA.

The plug will not fit in the port on the back back of my new iMac.

What do I do????
