Smart Playlist syncing with iPad

I have a smart playlist that contains songs where plays is "0" and the genre does not contain "Christmas", the playlist is set to limit the songs to 1000 and for Live Updating. It seems as though whenever I sync my iPad, it not only removes the songs I played from the playlist, but it also changes out various other songs as well. For instance today I listened to 19 songs from the playlist on my iPad. When I synced my iPad, it changed out 82 songs. When I last synced my iPad, this morning, it held only the 1000 songs from my playlist. It now holds 1000 songs from my playlist. Why does it change out other songs in addition to the ones that no longer qualify? It only started doing this recently (within the last few months). The songs all still qualify and it is not that big of a deal, but I am wondering how the live updating feature is causing this to happen.
