The symbol that looks like a face. I have been seeing it for the first time.

That is from a third party program called MacKeeper. It is a scam program that was likely installed with some other download that you did, and it should be deleted. Run a scan with Malwarebytes - it should detect it as a PUP (potentially unwanted program) and offer to remove it.
