itunes gift card help

I received an itunes gift card for christmas last year. I redeemed it shortly after receiving the card and the $15 showed up in the left hand corner of the window as if I had an available balance. When I proceeded to purchase music my debit card on file was charged instead of the gift card. I removed the debit card from the account thinking the purchases would be charged to the gift card but then I was unable to make any purchases at all. It's as if itunes doesn't recognize the gift card balance at all. Is there any way to fix this? Has anyone else had a similar problem? Thanks for the help!
