Gmail has usurped Mail

Google has taken over my Mail account on my MacPro and all my Mail msgs have disappeared from  that device.  They remain on my iPhone and iPad.  How do I get rid of the GMail msgs and restore the Mail msgs?  The same thing has happened with my wife's Yahoo account.

Did you recently update to Sierra?

Remove the accounts in Mail. This will take you to System Preferences > Internet Accounts. Uncheck Mail for each account.

Quit Mail, go to your User's Library/Mail/V4 folder. You will see several alphanumeric folders. One will be for locally stored messages. It will include the Outbox. If you have other accounts like iCloud etc, you should see a folder for each account.

If you still see the folder for Gmail and Yahoo, delete these folders. Removing the accounts should have removed the data for the account, but sometimes it does not.

If you still see a V3 or V2 folder, you can delete these folders. They should only contain MailData folder.

In MailData, delete the three files with Envelope in the name.

You might need to log into your Gmail account in your browser and do some clean up there. I suggest moving most Inbox messages to the All Mail folder. If you have thousands of messages in the Inbox, it's easier to move all Inbox to All Mail then move only the most recent back to the Inbox.

In System Preferences > Internet Accounts, add back one account at a time.

Open Mail and let your Gmail account sync.

If you are satisfied with the import, then add the Yahoo account back.
