Time Machine Suddenly Not Working

Time Machine backups have been happily chugging along the past few months. However today there was a warning that the backup failed. I clicked on "Details" and it said "The network backup disk does not support the required capabilities". Why would this happen after months of working just fine?

My Time Machine disk is USB 3 hard drive connected to the USB 3 port on an Asus RT-AC5300 router. I removed the backup disk from Time Machine and tried to re-select it. It tries for a while to reconnect and comes back with the same "required capabilities" message.

Why would this happen after months of working just fine?

The reason is that using a non-Apple NAS has never been a supported Time Machine configuration, and is therefore unsuitable for that purpose. To learn how to use Time Machine please read Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support.

I am using a Mac Pro running macOS 10.12.3 and macOS Server to provide time machine backup to my family's laptops. My MacBook , also running 10.12.3, is also having intermittent problems with the same error message as the original author (it worked today at 11:29, but not since then).

This suggests there is something else going on than just an incompatibility with a third party device.

Getting the same error using all Apple hardware and software...

Server Hardware: Mac Mini w/external WD My Book 8 TB drive

Server Software: macOS Server 5.3.1 on macOS Sierra 10.12.6

Client Software: macOS Sierra 10.12.6

Client Hardware: iMac 5K, MacBook Pro 2017, MacBook Pro 2012

One observation I have is that external drive now has 4.16 TB stored. It's being used not just for Time Machine but also Caching (cache size: 1 TB) and Software Updates.

Going to try stopping macOS Server processes then run Disk Tools.
