Do Not Enter Sign

All right, I have to admit, this is the first hard drive/major issue I have experienced in 11 years of owning a mac.

I have a late 2013 27" iMac.  Everything was fine until two weeks ago when I came down and it was powered off.  I thought that was weird because I left it on and we never lost power.  I turned it on and I had the "do not enter" sign appear.  I have searched high and low and tried various things.  At first I did the command + r trick and tried selecting a time machine backup - luckily I have many backups available to choose from but it failed.  I was on the most current version 10.12.5.

So through trying various things, finally this evening I was able to restore back to Mavericks.  Of course it formatted things and I have no files, but I now have no 3TB fusion drive access either.  It seems as if I only have about 120GB worth of drive.

Please advise.... I have no idea where to go from here.  Thank you kindly.

Jeff

Hello SoaringUSAEagle,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding that after receiving a prohibitory symbol on your Mac, you've been able to restore back to Mavericks but only have 120GB drive space. You've done a great job so far. I am happy to help.

First, if you are having issues with the volume structure on your Fusion drive, you may want to try the troubleshooting steps in the link below:

Mac mini (Late 2012 and later), iMac (Late 2012 and later): About Fusion Drive - Apple Support

If the issue persists, run Apple Diagnostics to test for possible hardware issues:

Have a wonderful day!

I did make some head way.  I was able to get Sierra 10.12.5 installed.

However, I am still having volume structure issues.  I only see one 120GB drive.  I do not see any other drives listed in the disk utility option, nor a Recovery HD option when selecting cmd r when I reboot.  I've researched and found a blog that goes through the steps to relink the fusion drive but that did not work as I don't see the disk UUID's.

What do you recommend?  I appreciate your assistance.

I ended up taking the iMac into our local Simply Mac for a diagnostic.  Luckily I have AppleCare protection on it - less than 2 weeks until it expires so I am thankful I am covered right now.

They pulled the drive out and deemed it fried after putting it on a tester and it wasn't showing up.  So here's to a new hard drive.  Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

So, my retirement present to myself, 3 years ago, my late 2013 iMac did not prove to have as much longevity and be as easily upgradeable as I had hoped.

Before installing the official Final non-Beta version of High Sierra on my  late 2013 iMac's Fusion drive, I had converted my drive back to HFS+,  as per Apple's instructions for Fusion drives.

I then downloaded the HSierra install from Appstore and attempted to install it. Notably, I saw NO WARNINGS about the incompatibility with 3Tb Fusion Drives.

I spent around 8 hours attempting to install unsuccessfully, and having the machine crash, and not able to revert to the beta. I just could not get my machine to work. I used internet recovery, USB OS Installs, everything that I knew of.

On several occasions I got the NO ENTRY sign on my screen. On ONE occasion I got  an Apple Support 1007F error message.

So even though I followed Apple's instructions about converting my drive BACK to HFS+, High Sierra still won't install.

Turns out that there is a recognized issue with High Sierra on 3Tb drives, even when converted back to HFS+.

There is nothing much that I can find specifically about this 3Tb Fusion anomaly on Apple pages, just on other forums.

Luckily, eventually, I managed to reinstall 'LOW' Sierra on my iMac. And it's going to have to stay like that for a while.

I have had enough of the crashes that my machine is subject to when attempting to install High Sierra.

I am SO angry that the 3Tb drive issue does not allow High Sierra to run.

In order to stop thinking about the Sierras, I have adopted a beautiful image of the Adirondacks for my desktop background. So as far as I'm concerned, Apple, until you solve this 3Tb anomaly, I'm running OSX Adirondacks as a protest.

GRRRR!!!!

I hope Apple comes up with something soon.
