Bluetooth Disconnecting

Hello,
I have an issue with my bluetooth and I can't find a way to fix it. I tried most of what I could find online, but nothing has worked so far.

The issue:

- My bluetooth devices disconnecting all at once. The devices are Apple's Magic Mouse 2 and Keyboard.

The frequency:

- Random. Sometimes it happens multiple times in a few minutes, other times works fine for a few hours before disconnecting. It has been going on for months now.

The duration:
- Usually they disconnect and reconnect automatically within 10 seconds. Sometimes, they disconnect and don't come back online at all; when it happens, I'm forced to shut down the computer via the power button.

The machine:

- The machine I work on is an iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011), 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5, 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3, ADM Radeon HD6770M 512MB. It's running macOS Sierra, Version 10.12.5.

When it first showed up:
- A couple of months back. I had recently updated OS X to the latest version, so that's what I thought caused the issue. No other software was installed in the few

Steps I took:

- At first I tried almost everything I could find online, but nothing seemed to work. I decided then to format the hard drive, in order to install an older version of Sierra (thinking the update was the issue); it didn't have any effect. The issue showed up again while I was still downloading most of my apps, which I have had for years and never caused any problem.
I read it could be an issue with the Wifi too, some kind of conflict between the two. I'm working to get hooked up to the router by lan, but it won't happen anytime soon. Anyway since bluetooth devices are a standard by Apple, it wouldn't make sense to be unable to use them properly when connected to a wifi.

I have no clue what to do next to fix this problem, and it's getting really annoying especially for work.

Any suggestion on how to fix it?

If your Apple wireless mouse, keyboard, or trackpad aren't working as expected - Apple Support

I already checked those, thank you. Clicking and pressing keys is what I do to reconnect them, but it doesn't solve the fact that it disconnects again after a while.

As for interference, I don't have any new device that hasn't been there in a long time, and there isn't much anyway. Headset, MacBook Pro and iPhone is all that I have nearby.

The router should be within the 10 meters, but it has been there since before I had this iMac, so I doubt it has anything to do with it. As I said the problem came to be just a few months ago; everything worked just fine for years before then.

Any other suggestion?

Disconnect ALL Bluetooth devices  (yes including keyboard and mouse) and use a USB Keyboard and Mouse. If you don't have these, then borrow them or purchase them. Then turn off Bluetooth and restart the computer in Safe Mode and then restart normally. Next turn on Bluetooth and then begin re-pairing each device.

Just tried, nothing happened.

I connected USB devices, removed the bluetooth ones, turned off bluetooth and restarted in safe mode. Once in safe mode, turned bluetooth back on and paired everything. Then I disconnected the USB devices and restarted.

After about 20 minutes the problem showed up again: the devices disconnected for a few seconds, then came back online.

Last night I was able to see how the bluetooth behaves when the devices do not come back up. All devices are marked as "Not Connected", while the bluetooth (in the top right corner) is marker as "Not Available". Another thing I notices is that when this happens, I can't turn the bluetooth off. I click the buttons to do so, but it doesn't work.

I see 2 major issues, first is your computer has insufficient RAM. 4GB of RAM was fine when you had 10.6.x it however you now have 10.12.5 which is 6 generations removed. At an absolute bare minimum you should have 8/GB RAM however I recommend 12 or 16GB. Purchase RAM from www.macsales.com or Crucial as both sell high quality products at reasonable   prices. iMacs are sensitive to using quality RAM and both vendors have a long history of supplying this.

Next is you don't have a backup plan, using ANY computer without a back up is shortsighted and foolish and will certainly result in lost data. At a bare minimum you should have Time Machine configured. If you don't know about Time Machine  please click Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support.

After installing the RAM then retest your Bluetooth and we can go from there.

I never thought about updating my RAM. I will try replacing it, but it might take me a while to get the new one. I'll update this post when I have done it.

As for Time Machine, I didn't set it up because I don't need it. Most of my stuff is safe on iCloud, and I manually back up all my work files since I work on multiple computers.

Thanks for the help so far, I'll keep you posted as soon as I get the new RAM.

That is false security, when it comes to backup most experienced users have redundant backups because yes even a cloud based backup can fail. Would you trust your bank if you knew they only had one backup of your financial records??

I still STRONGLY recommend a local backup solution such as Time Machine or creating a bootable clone.

I have the same problem. The random disconnects started a year ago and I muddled through, suspecting that it is a HW issue with the MacBook bluetooth module. They seemed to be a bit less frequent when the battery level of the keyboard and Magic Mouse I'm using is full, but that is only a gut feeling, never measured it. Your observation regarding the functionality (or lack thereof) of the bluetooth menu started here only with the upgrade to Sierra.

My MacBook Pro 17" has 8GB RAM and shows exactly the same behavior. This is not a RAM problem, I'd say. It started with Mavericks and got worse since the upgrade to Sierra.

Macbook Pro 8gb ram same issue, been happening since I did the last update

It appears to be more of software than hardware issues, since this only happened to most of us after updating to Sierra 10.12.6. It's appalling that I am unable to use my original Apple Magic Mouse and Keyboard after installing the latest software.

I've tried the High Sierra beta as well but that does not seem to solve anything. The problem still persists so I don't have much hope for this problem to go away soon. Will the folks at Apple do something about it?

Case in point: I installed the latest software on another Macbook Pro Retina, and another Magic Keyboard. Same problem of disconnecting and connecting sporadically. Not the kind of standard I am expecting from Apple Products.
