Computer crashed, moved iPad to new PC...

I had the iPad on a PC, life was great and then it crashed. That computer is now in the trash and i have a new laptop, i installed iTunes fresh tonight and connected my iPad. It wants to erase my iPad which has all my apps on it that i don't want to lose in order to sync. It keeps prompting me to erase my iPad. How do i get around this, surely if your computer crashed and your iPad if full of data you cant be expected to give all of that up just because you switch PC's?

Help.
Thanks

I just went through this myself. Here's what you need to do:

1) Without connecting your iPad to your laptop, start iTunes. Click on Edit. Click on Preferences. Click on Devices. Check the box next to "Prevent your iPod etc. from automatically syncing." Click OK.

2) Now connect your iPad to your laptop and start iTunes.

3) When iTunes starts, right click on your iPad under Devices in the left column. Select Transfer purchases etc.

4) After it finishes transferring all your apps to your new laptop, right click on your iPad and select Backup your iPad.

5) After it finishes backing up your iPad, right click on your iPad and select Restore etc.

6) After it finishes restoring, left click on your iPad , then click on the Apps tab on top, and check the box next to Sync Apps, then click on Apply below.

If everything on your iPad looks good after the sync, go back and click on Edit / Preferences / Devices and UN-check the box next to Prevent your iPod etc. The only other thing you may want to check is if your contacts, bookmarks, etc. are syncing correctly now. If not, go to the Info tab after connecting and make sure you indicate which features you want to sync with what sources.

That should do it.

Did you backup your computer? Surely computers crash, and surely you must have a backup, right?

Have you authorized your new computer with iTunes?

See the iTunes Store menu item *+Authorize computer...+*

No, since i just got the iPad i hadnt backed up the computer yet, typically I do but ive been travelling so no.

virtualgeo...your solution worked like a charm, im suprised its that easy, thanks!

Orlando Tommy, you're welcome. We here at the "Unpaid User Support Team for Apple" are happy to assist you...and we even speak English.

Seriously, this is a great forum. I have had a lot of help from others solving problems I couldn't figure out, so it's my way of "paying it forward". Maybe you can do the same some time. Good luck.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you. Worked for me as well.

What about the music and videos?

How does this help for photos, or music, or any other content aside from Applications?

Thank you VirtualGeo, this worked great! I didn't even restore my iPad, just transfered purchases, backed up, then clicked sync.

Just finished reading your post, about moving apps etc to a new PC..but will your instructions also work with books etc?

thanks

Any content that you purchase from iTunes, the App Store and iBooks will be transferred to the computer when you transfer purchases as described. This does not work for photos - only purchased content.

If you are in the U.S., you can also download purchased apps, music and TV shows again for free (if the content is stil available in the stores) as long as you use the same Apple ID and iTunes account that you used for the original purchase.
