Help please with 2006 MacBook Pro 17"

I wonder if anyone can help me please? I've been a Mac user since I purchased my first IIcx and have a number of newer and older macs. However, I've recently had two older machines go haywire within a few days of each other and wonder if it's just old age / coincidence / or something to worry about. Also, what might be the problem and if they are worth fixing.

My old and trusty 2006 17" Macbook Pro  has just gone haywire.  The screen has lines across it and although I can boot and re-boot, I can't get past the point where the login screen appears as shown. Also the Mac will not boot up from the system disc so I cannot carry out first aid. I'm guessing either the graphics card or the logic board. I've attached a screenshot in the hope that some Mac wizard can help me - is the problem fixeable ( and worth doing) or should I let it go to the great Mac graveyard in the sky? I've no problems with the latter as I always have everything backed up via Time Machine and have had more than my fair share of value from each machine.

It's a Core 2 Duo 2.33 17" (T7600)  MA611LL/A  Model 1212 (EMC None) Late 2006. Running Snow Leopard.

Ta!

Hi,

I think you're right on with either the GPU or logic board. Either way, unfortunately, I don't think it's worth fixing.
