moving from desktop iMac to new 2017 MBP

I am currently using a late 2015 iMac, OS X Sierra, Fusion drive 1.1 Tb,have ordered a 2017 15" MBP with a 512 internal drive.

I have slimmed down the total storage used on my iMac to 275 gb--my iTunes and iPhoto library are on external drives.

I am wondering whether it is best to use Migration Assistant to move essentials over to the new MBP or whether I should just start anew.

I have Mail,Keychain,Contacts,Calendars in iCloud, and most  purchased applications could be downloaded from the APP store to the new computer.

My question is, which would give me the most control over what comes to the new smaller internal drive on the MBP--Migration Assistant or doing everything manually?

thanks for any help

Caroline
