The Volume Controls dont work on my iMac anymore.

My volume controls do not work anymore. A couple of days ago I plugged in some earphones into my iMac and the volume was fine, but when I unplugged them, the volume keys on my wireless keyboard doesn't work anymore.  If I go into iTunes, I have to control the volume with the mouse in iTunes.  Any software I go into that has sound, I have to control the sound from the software I'm in with the mouse.  This happened to me once before but I cannot remember how to fix it....Any help I receive I would greatly appreciate it.  Also, I'm using Mac OS X Version 10.6.8.

I had this problem too. On top of it, although my Headphones were selected in the Output pane, for some reasons the sound was coming out of my Speakers. It was working before but it stopped without any clear reasons. I rebooted but with no effect. Then I decided to I switch my cables a few times in a row (Headphones on the Speakers plug and vice-versa) and out of the blue after a few switches, it all worked again. Not sure why though. Give it a try, you might have the same luck.
