Fakepath attachment
Please help! When sending an attachment, it says C:/fakepath before the name of the file..what makes this happen? How do I fix it? Is this a virus? This is compromising my business please help as soon as possible...
Forgot to mention that nothing attaches when I do this and I get an error so it needs to be REMOVED..can't believe I am having so much trouble with this pricy computer!!
Mac OS X does not refer to its drives by letter.
C:/fakepath
I have no idea what you have downloaded or how such a thing is getting there.
This is not a virus. See my Mac Malware Guide.
What it is, I don't know. What e-mail program are you using, and where do you see "C:/fakepath"? Can you post a screenshot of what you're seeing? (Press command-shift-4 and drag a rectangle around the relevant area, avoiding any personal information but including enough that we can see the context of where it can be seen. Then click the camera icon in a reply here to include that image in a post.
I've seen this when uploading pictures to Craigslist to attach to a posting. So I assume it's the way SOME web sites deal with file attachments/uploads. But, in Craiglist's case, it successfully does the operation. Here is a screen shot clip from Craigslist where I've uploaded a picture from my iPhoto Library. To the original poster, what application or site are you trying to work with?
This has happened on two websites: Equator, used for short sales as I work as real estate consultant primarily with short sales and on Ringcentral.com which is a online fax company.
I can't take a screenshot but will tell you that when I attach the document it says, for example, C:/fakepath Bank Authorization form
Whatever document I attach it puts the C:/fakepath in front of any document…and then it won't let me attach the document..there has got to be some way to remove this
The e-mail program I use is google, I use Safari web browser, I also downloaded Google chrome and upgraded the Adobe reader and none of these solutions..
If you are using WebMail inside a Browser to send those google mail messages, it is a very obscure feature of HTML5.
Some users have gotten relief by running Software Update and making certain that everything is up-to-date.
I am not using e-mail when this happens..it is on a website where I have to attach a document..I haven't downloaded anything unusual. I have been very careful with any links that I open.
Unfortunately, I think you are a victim of a poorly written website that doesn't fully support a Mac. I suggest you contact the website and ask them how they expect you to upload to their site.
Try Firefox, a free download.
I think there is something more to this. I am not a computer expert but I can't imagine that Apple users can have so many problems as the Mac computer with attachments etc since the Mac Book Pro is such a GOOD computer..no one would put up with this for long..going to take it to an expert and have them decipher the problem. Thanks!

What you describe is a problem with two sites, and they're sites that I've never heard of before. I agree with TrickyRick62, it's likely they are poorly-made sites that are written with Internet Explorer in mind and not tested with much else. That sort of thing isn't hugely common these days, as most web designers understand that they need to target a wider audience on today's internet. But it does happen, with less mainstream sites built by less-experienced or less-skilled web designers.
Grant's suggestion may work. Sometimes switching browsers can make a site work. Sometimes, though, when the site is specifically crafted for Internet Explorer only - either purposefully or through ignorance - only Windows will do. Such sites deserve to be boycotted, IMHO, as there's no excuse for that sort of thing.
As much as I wish I can boycott these two websites they are an integral part of my job. (One is for negotiating Bank of America short sales and the other is a great online fax) The puzzling thing is that this has worked before and all of a sudden this fakepath attachment comes up? doesn't make sense and the c drive thing really throws me..going to pay the Apple Store a visit and ask why this is happening and make them fix it..ridiculous as I have wasted a lot of time on this..I have downloaded Google chrome, I can't stand Safari any more, will download Firefox but never liked that ISP, and I don't think you can download IE on MAC right? Thanks for your help!

That's unfortunate. You'll need to contact the admins for the BoA site at least, and do the same for the fax site (or find a replacement for that one). They may have made changes to their site recently that broke it on a Mac.
Did you try using a different browser, like Firefox?
going to pay the Apple Store a visit and ask why this is happening and make them fix it
You can certainly ask them to fix it, but if I'm right, they can't.
I don't think you can download IE on MAC right?
Correct. Microsoft threw a little snit when Apple had the audacity to develop their own browser, and ceased all development of Internet Explorer for the Mac. There hasn't been a Mac version of Internet Explorer in a long time, and though I'm sure you could find a very old version to download somewhere, it won't work on a modern Mac.
Thomas-
A google search for fakepath brings up a boatload of references to problems caused by Browsers making some bad decisions about what to send up instead of the actual pathname when you Browser-upload a file (which html5 seems to think is a privacy fault).
It appears a slightly older Browser, or a different Browser is all that is needed to make this problem go away while Browser-makers come to their senses and do something better.
