Lightning to SD card camera reader not working.

I bought the Apple lightning to Sd card reader for my ipad mini only a week ago. The first time I used it it worked fine and I imported photos. The next day I tried to use it and it does not recognise it at all. I have plugged it in and unplugged it, turned ipad on and off and tried different sd cards.

Any ideas?... Please help I am really frustrated I only bought this so I could back photos up whilst travelling. Also I can not return the reader to the shop for at least a month.

Thanks in advance :)

Hey ILaura,

Thanks for the question. The following resource provides basic information and troubleshooting steps for the Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader:

iPad: Using the Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit

Thanks,

Matt M.

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. https://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430https://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430

Hi

Thanks for your replies, I had already read the troubleshooting and I have just reset my Ipad.

Still not working.

Do you think there is a fault with the reader? It's strange that it worked once then stopped, it hasn't been damaged at all it's only been out of the box once. I wish I hadn't bothered spending the money on it :(

I'm assuming you're transfering pictures from SD card to your iPad.  Are you sure the pictures are named in the standard naming convention, which would look like:  DNS_0000  If they are not named in this fashion, they won't transfer using the Card Reader.

Yes I am transferring from SD card. I don't know how they are named and I'm not sure how to check to be honest! I did manage to import pics on the first attempt though and nothing has changed since same camera, card and photos.

If nothing has changed, you may just have a defective card reader.  Do you have the photos app open before you connect the card reader and insert the SD card?

I have tried before and after opening the photos app. No joy! :)

Sorry to say you likely have a defective SD Card Reader.  Sorry.  The good news is Apple will replace it.

I would however take your iPad and your SD card with you to the Apple Store to make sure it works before you leave.

I thought so.... Just thought I would ask in case I was missing anything.

Thank you for all the replies!

OK, This is how you need to do it. You CANNOT copy pic files to a SD card then plug that SD card into your lightning card reader. The card has to be taken directly from camera. Pics must be in a sub directory, most often a DICM folder. Your camera formats SD cards automatically with a sub directory.  If you take SD card directly from camera, plug the card into the SD/lightning reader, it opens you photo library and it begins loading your photos. You then do either a selective or complete import. It has nothing to do with upgrading OS to 7 or any other. I just transferred a bunch of photos and I use IOS8.4. As far as genuine Apple SD/lightning adapter, mine was purchased on Amazon in 2012 and is a genuine Apple accessory so I really can't say if any non-apple readers will work. Hope this helps.

Thank you! I solved my issue working around this.

Filesystem should be FAT32 and folders and filenames matter.

I am having exactly the same problem but with trying to upload photos from the card reader to my phone. It has been working fine for some time and I have uploaded 100s photos previously but now it won't upload any at all. I have done nothing differently and my phone has plenty of storage.

Thank you for this post! The key for my extremely inconsistent issues was that I often did not put photos into a sub-directory on the SD card. To clarify on your post though, you can in fact copy photos to an SD card (from a computer or whatever source) and have the reader/import function work just fine... You just need to copy them into a sub-directory. I just created a new folder called "DCIM" on the SD card and copy photos into that folder. Works like a charm now.
