Will iPhone 5C be compatible with Apple Watch S...

I have read some reports that my  iPhone 5C will not be compatible with the new Apple Watch Series 3, because it cannot be upgraded to IOS 11 which will be required to support Watch OS 4.

is this correct?

I had planned to buy the new watch when released, but can't justify the cost of replacing my phone at the same time.

No - Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS) requires an iPhone 5s or newer with iOS 11 or newer.

Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) requires an iPhone 6 or newer with iOS 11 or newer.
