Battery life issues since upgrade to OS4

Prior to upgrading I would need to recharge every 2-3 days depending on usage. I would generally charge overnight and if the watch didn't need recharging I would put it in airplane mode.

Since the upgrade I have had battery issues. 2 nights ago I went to bed with the watch at 75% battery life remaining. I put the watch in airplane mode but in the morning the phone was dead. I charged it until around 15:00 at which point I took it out of airplane mode and started wearing it. I wore it for the rest of the day and went for a walk when I had an activity tracker running. When I took it off before bed it has 98% battery life left and I put it in airplane mode.

This morning it was dead again. Nothing else has changed on the phone nor has the way that I use it.

From similar posts that I am seeing around it would appear that this update has had a major impact on battery life?

Hi

Whilst I can't say why the battery charge has fallen in the way that you describe, rather than placing your Apple Watch into Airplane Mode overnight, you may find it more convenient to charge it nightly, overnight.

Charging routine

Apple advises that you can charge Apple Watch whenever you want. The battery on Apple watch cannot be overcharged and there is no need to let the battery discharge to any particular level first, nor any benefit to be gained from doing so:

Apple's tips for maximising battery life and battery lifespan on Apple Watch are detailed here:

You may find it most convenient to charge it nightly, overnight. The battery will not suffer any harm from regular charging. Charging will stop automatically when the battery is fully charged and start again if and when required due to ongoing battery usage. The battery will then be fully charged ready for the start of each day.

Be sure to follow Apple's safety and handling instructions (see the links below) and also note that:

  • It is not possible to turn the watch off whilst it is on the charger and connected to power - this is normal.
  • It is also normal for your watch, power adapter and charging cable to become warm when connected to power.

You may also find (the optional) Nightstand Mode useful:

Battery life concerns

Whilst some users have reported experiencing reduced battery life, that is not the case for all users.

Battery life varies depending on use and other factors. Examples are detailed here:

If battery life is significantly shorter than Apple's examples suggest that you should expect, then it may help to follow these steps, which have previously resolved battery life issues for other users, including after software updates when usage has not otherwise changed. They may also help with the issue that you have described.

Check performance after each:

  • If you have ever (not necessarily recently) previously used the Workout app and/or any third-party fitness or sleep tracking apps to record workouts on your watch, check on your watch to see whether there is a paused activity within any of them. If there is, end that activity from within the app on your watch (not your iPhone).
    • If in doubt, remove any such third-party apps from your Apple Watch.

  • Unpair and re-pair your Apple Watch:

  • Some users have previously experienced battery life issues in connection with using corporate profiles and/or Exchange Calendars. If you are using an Exchange Calendar, one or more of these steps may help:
    • Archive your Exchange Calendar for all items before today.
    • Remove / delete all old inbox messages relating to calendar invites (accept and decline notifications).
    • Create a rule in your Outlook Mail account that moves all future accept and decline replies, immediately upon receipt, into a separate mail folder that does not sync with your iPhone and Apple Watch.
    • Check your Exchange Calendar for errors.

Having tried the previous steps, if your remain concerned that battery life is shorter than it should be, then I suggest contacting Apple Support (remote diagnostics and/or mail-in service may be available, if required), making a Genius Bar reservation or visiting an Apple Authorised Service Provider for assistance:
