Sierra Bluetooth Not Available
Hi
I installed Sierra about 10 days ago. I've had a few niggly problems but nothing more than is usual after an update. However, yesterday evening after having left my iMac alone for 3 hours I found it in deep sleep. When I eventually managed to wake it my wireless mouse and keyboard would not respond and the Bluetooth Menu item was crossed and giving a 'Bluetooth: Not Available' drop-down message. The Bluetooth PreferencePane is no longer in System Preferences.
I have shut down and restarted many times; trashed com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and reset SMC several times; reset PRAM several times and finally reinstalled MacOS Sierra 10.12. None of these has solved the problem. Luckily I had a wired keyboard and mouse stored away; if I hadn't I would be snookered.
I'm now lost for anything more to try. Does anyone else have this problem and have they found a solution? Is Apple going to put out a fix?
Here's hoping ...

Might be corrupted Bluetooth preferences. It can happen.
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.Bluetooth.plist file to the Trash.
Then restart your Mac and go to System Preferences > Bluetooth.
You may need to re "pair" your Bluetooth devices.
Thanks but it's not that easy unfortunately. As I've already said, I've done this several times and the problem still exists.
Have you found a solution? I have a similar issue. I've deleted plist files, reset SMC, PRAM, reinstalled Sierra, etc. Also tried bringing up the debug menu for bluetooth but all I get is "Create Diagnostics Report on the Desktop". In System Report, Bluetooth shows "No information found". This was working fine in El Capitan and broke after updating.
No I haven't unfortunately. My problem and the efforts I have tried to fix it mirror yours exactly. I have been in touch with Apple Support and they believe it is a hardware problem and I will need to have the Bluetooth module replaced. Like you the problem only occurred after upgrading to Sierra.
The work will be done under warranty so it is not the end of the world but it is a **** nuisance. I cannot find an Apple Store or an Apple Certified repairer who can do the work in less than 2-3 days so I am now waiting for a least-disruptive window before taking it in. As I originally wrote, if I hadn't an old wired keyboard and mouse I would be totally up the creek without a paddle.
It will be Sod's Law that as soon as I have the Bluetooth module replaced Apple will bring out a firmware update that would have fixed the old module.
Good luck with yours Treadpool.
That's insane that an OS upgrade could cause the BT module to fail and need to be replaced. I'll bring it to the Apple Store near me this weekend and see what they say. Ugh.
Please let me know what your Apple Store have to say. I'd be very interested. I strongly suspect the BT hardware has not failed but it is software or firmware problem. It is very unusual for a Bluetooth module to fail unless it is damaged by a hard knock or liquid is poured over it - neither of which has occurred.
You can try this:
1. Hold down shift and option
2. Click on Bluetooth icon in menu bar (secret menu will be revealed)
3. Select "debug"
4. Select "Reset the Bluetooth module"
Hopefully then you will be good to go!
If this doesn't work, try restarting the computer before doing the above and hopefully the bluetooth icon will appear normal and not have the crossed line through it
Forgot to update, sorry. Went in and they pretty much validated our thoughts. Apparently the BT module failed after upgrading - perhaps from a previous dormant issue. BT doesn't work in any new installation or temp OS. ***** - out of warranty and not spending a couple hundred on a new module.
Thanks Treadpool for your reply. I had the BT card in my iMac replaced mid-October. It was done under warranty and took a couple of days. All seems OK now. The guy in the repair shop said it was highly unlikely a software upgrade would knock out a hardware module but I still have my suspicions.
I'm considering buying a new wired keyboard and mouse. Bluetooth ones aren't all they're cracked up to be, soooo slow to wake after sleep and useless in a situation like the above.
As JazzerJ seid, he trashed this file already so your answer is not helping.
I have this problem. Restoring an earlier version of the OS from Time Machine fixed it, so it's not a hardware problem like some suspect.
Trying to reconnect with a level 2 rep, the holidays got in the way of troubleshooting.
Disconnecting all my peripherals and leaving only the power connected I shut down and then pressed "control, option, shift" for several seconds and then released and pressed the power button. My machine started back up and bluetooth came back. Of course my fans are now running at full speed...
Sierra seems like a hot mess. I wish I could downgrade.
macOS Sierra: Revert to a previous macOS version
If you do revert, I'd use Setup Assistant to restore your data. This process takes a while, so do it when you won't need the computer for several hours, based on my experience.
I had the same issue. After trying all the options and contacting apple support without luck. I searched the community and found a thread stating that:
- shutting down the machine
- removing all peripherals (aka plug out all usb cables)
- waiting 5 minutes
- restarting
should help. And indeed it did!
