iMac slow

This is a rather lengthy question but, I am a novice when it comes to understanding certain aspects of computers.

Over the past year my iMac has become slower and slower and I can’t understand why. I am working with an early 2009 iMac, with 640 GB hard drive and 8 GB memory running Yosemite 10.10.5

The computer rarely, if ever, crashes but programs are very slow to open.  I have looked at my storage and it shows I only have 34 GB of free space on a 640 GB hard drive. I have opened “About this Mac” and looked at the storage breakdown. I don’t understand how these figures can be accurate.  For example, it shows my photos are consuming 166 GB of space on my hard drive. I have photos in three program; Photoshop Elements, Photos, and iPhotos. When I add these three together I only come up with 83 GB collectively. Likewise, it shows I have 120 GB of movies.  I don’t do anything with movies. I have 21 videos saved and they only average about 2 minutes long.  Certainly, this can’t account for 120 GB.  I have verified the disk in Disk Dr. First Aid, I have run Memory Clean and Malwarebytes and there are no issues.

I have considered doing a back up, wiping the hard drive clean and started over from scratch, but that raises other questions. If I have a virus or something of this nature that is causing the problem, wouldn’t this still be there amongst my back up and therefore just be reloaded to the computer when I start over?

My other option is to take the computer into an Apple Store and have them give me an evaluation and fix it. I would just like to avoid that cost if possible.

I have had good results with the Apple Community in helping me with problems in the past. Hopefully I can get some great feed-back to help me resolve this problem.

Thanks in advance for your responses!
