Why Does the Watch Homekit App Need an iPhone o...

I have an Apple Watch Series 3 and was wondering why the Home App on the watch requires either my iPhone to be nearby, or for the watch to be connected to a Wi-Fi network.

What is it about the Home App that cannot be used over LTE/cellular? I understand that non-Apple products may choose or not choose to support cellular only functionality, but this is an Apple product.

I cannot imagine that it is a security issue, given that I can operate over Wi-Fi, and that Apple Pay works phone/wi-fi less.

Apple advises that, if your Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) is connected to a cellular network, but your iPhone is not nearby, then your Apple Watch can do the same things that it can when connected to a trusted Wi-Fi network, which do include using the Home app:

(Note that you are not talking to Apple here - this is a user-based technical support community).
