locked out of my ipad after update of ios 10
How can I unlock my ipad after ios 10 update?
If your passcode is not being recognized on your iPad, you will need to restore the device to remove the passcode. See the instructions in this support document. If you forgot the passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled - Apple Support
Unlock what exactly? Did you forget your passcode, or is the device asking for an Apple ID and password? If the later, then you have experienced Activation Lock. Did you purchase this device new? Do you not recognize the partial Apple ID displayed on the screen?
To assist further, you need to provide additional information.
I have this problem too. I recently installed the latest update. Now when I open my iPad, it says "press home to unlock" and then when I do it tells me to enter my four-digit numerical password (as always) but it will not accept my pascode anymore. I know I did not forget my passcode. I've had the same one since I got my iPad. I have never changed it.
This is exactly what has happened to me. I actually had stopped using a passcode but tried all previous passcode that I've ever used and nothing has worked over 12 hours. I need my iPad for work urgently

This has happened to me overnight as well, didn't have a passcode set on it at all yet after the update it's now asking for one. It's pathetic that I now have to erase everything and start again.
I have been locked out twice on my iPhone 7plus this issue needs to be sorted asap
I do not want a passcode on my iPad and I disabled it. And yes, I know the difference between the passcode and the Apple ID. Then Apple decides to enable it as part of the software update. Now I am locked out of my iPad and I have to lose all my data because the only way to use my iPad is to erase it???!!!!
This is ridiculous. Disable means Disable. It does not mean "Dear Apple, please enable it for me as you see fit".
The act of updating the software will not enable a passcode. When activating your device after the update, it will prompt you to create a passcode, but if you choose not to, it won't be created. As far as losing all of your data, if you have been creating regular backups of the device, you will not lose anything. iCloud provides you the opportunity to create a backup of the device daily by just keeping the device connected to wi-fi, power, and the screen being locked. Most you would probably lose is less than 24 hours worth of data.
Thank you for the reply. The act of updating iOS DID enable the passcode in not one but two of my
iPads. So I am locked out for good. It will not go beyond the Hello screen.
The update enabled the passcode without my permission and made me lose a weeks data (since last backup). Thank you Apple.
You are not addressing Apple here, this is a user to user support forum, and Apple does not participate here.
If you cannot get past the Hello screen, then it is not a passcode. What happens when you attempt to tap on the Hello screen to continue?
You only backup once a week?!?
I had removed the passcode a couple weeks ago. My iPad updated overnight and Now I'm locked out. Seems that apples only answer is to do a full restore. Hey Apple, do you think maybe there's a bug in the updates >:| ???

First off, you are not addressing Apple here, this is a user to user support forum. Apple does not participate here.
Your iPad cannot update overnight unless a couple of things are done. First you have to have had the update download on your device. Second you would have been prompted to update, at which time you accepted, or you delayed it to update when connected to power overnight, or you cancelled it. A device cannot update without some user intervention. Seems from what you say, you must have selected the delayed update.
Next, a passcode cannot be automatically generated. When the device is finished updating it goes into Activation, and that cannot finish until there is user intervention again. You have to complete the activation, and at that time you are prompted for a passcode, or you can skip that step.
If you created a passcode for the device and have forgotten it, then the only recourse is to restore the device to factory. This protects your data. No bug.
Chris, in no way i am associating you with Apple and thank you so much for trying to help. As you can see from my own and other peoples' experience this is a genuine problem that affected us negatively and we are all quite frustrated.
If you have any good suggestions to help us unlock our iOS device when we don't have the passcode then we will be grateful for your help.
If you want to discuss peoples' habits is using passcodes or backups then let's do it in another thread.
