I had this problem too up until a couple moments ago!

First of all you do NOT need to download anything to remove something. All I did was open Chrome > Preferences then I scrolled down until I saw 'search engine used in address bar' where across from it said 'playsearchnow'. I just clicked on playsearchnow and chose Google instead but Chrome shut down. I tried this three times and failed, got fed up so I just reset Chrome. And that solved it.

Looking back at the preferences, I can see that the 'show home button' switch is disabled and it wasn't when I had playsearchnow so maybe that and the fact that the search engine used in address bar is now Google fixed it. I just recommend reseting Google. Don't regret it one bit, still have all my bookmarks etc. Hope that helps!
