my bluetooth is not recognizing new magic mouse 2

purchased new Magic Mouse 2 from Mac Store.  Sure they said, just plug the supplied cord in back of mouse, then into USB on laptop.  make sure your computer is updated.  turn on switch to mouse.  your computer will automatically find and pair with mouse.  Ready to use! 

what they don't tell you is how to get your computer's bluetooth to recognize the mouse.  unless someone has a fix for this, returning this piece of $80 junk back to mac store.
