Find My Mac is Exploited by Hackers

I recently had my macbook locked by hackers who were able to get my user id and password.  With that, they were able to remotely lock my mac using the "find my mac" tool.  They then sent me an email telling me that if i wanted the passcode to unlock, I would have to send them money.  Fortunately, I was able to take the computer to an apple service center for unlock.  The service tech informed me that this is a HUGE vulnerability that Apple has failed to address for years.  He told me to disable the Find my Mac/Find my iPhone feature and to NEVER use it again.  I can't believe Apple makes it so easy for someone's devices to be held for ransom.  Ridiculous.

Sorry this happened but that is terrible advice.

You would do better by using stronger passwords and changing them often. 

What happened was due to your password being compromised. That is not Apples fault.

It is meant to be a convenience for those who lost their only trusted device a need to access Icloud.com.

Without your password there is no way to exploit that feature.
