Facebook notification issue

Something seems odd with the Facebook notifications in macOS Sierra. I suddenly had an issue that whenever there is a notification in Facebook and my Mac notifies me about it, the notification banner on the upper-right hand corner of the screen says that I have 200+ (about 278) notifications pending. Also, Notification Center displays 200+ notifications.

I checked the notification in Facebook and I only had 1 notification, not 200+ as displayed by the banner and in Notification Center. It is as if that 1 notification in Facebook is multiplied by more than a hundred-fold in Notification Center.

I tried deleting my Facebook account (via the Internet Accounts tab in System Preferences) and creating it again, but to no avail. For now, I just unticked the Notification check box under Facebook's Internet Accounts settings to stop the notifications.

I hope that there's someone that could help me with this issue. Thanks in advance.

What happens if you now re-check the notification checkbox under Facebook's Internet Account?

I ticked the check box just now and used my mother's iPad to send a message to my Facebook, just to check the notification. The banner still displayed 277 notifications, but I only sent 1 message.

Additional info:

I have an app called Go for Facebook. It is an app that lets me display Facebook without opening my browser (Safari). I tried uninstalling the app and activating the Notification check box of Facebook under Internet Accounts, but the issue still persists.

Update:

I did the NVRAM and SMC resets, but the issue still persists.

Does it still happen if you boot in safe mode? (see Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support - yes even if your Mac starts up ok).

I followed your suggestion regarding on booting my Mac on safe mode, but unfortunately the issue persists. I just got a notification or two and the banner displayed about 300 notifications received. I again sent 1 message using my mother's iPad, and the banner displayed 120+ notifications received. The Notification Center will show a long list of Facebook notifications amounting to the same number displayed on the notification banner.

I have the same issue on my late 2013 iMac running macOS Sierra. It's annoying and just started happening about a week or so ago give or take.

All I have been doing is clearing the notifications. Not sure if it is a backend problem or an os problem.

No worries. At least I know that this is not an isolated issue in my case. I would suggest to uncheck the Notification option in the Facebook settings under Internet Accounts to cease its annoyance. That's the only remedy for the meantime until someone could pinpoint the problem and help us with this issue. If you want, you could use the same app that I use to view my Facebook without opening it in Safari. It's called Go for Facebook.

That is exactly what I did!

I also have the exact same issue on my mid 2010 MacBook Pro running macOS Sierra.

Both machines have notifications for Facebook turned off. I check the site frequently enough anyway.

I just started experiencing an issue where for every actual Facebook notification, I receive three notifications in Notification Centre. It's a far cry from the hundreds you're receiving but it's still annoying.

Meanwhile, for Slack, each new notification replaces the previous one. Usually. Restarting everything sometimes fixes it, but only for a little while.

Something is seriously buggy with Sierra's notification handling.

I have not experienced anything wrong regarding to the notifications of my other apps, just the Facebook notifications. True, it is pretty annoying.

I had macOS Sierra since its release and it's quite odd that these notification issues just manifested a week ago or within this week.

Same here, hundreds of notifications about my own comments alone.

As of the moment, you are the 3rd person to report that this happens. Therefore, this issue may be brought about by the new OS. I would suggest disabling the Facebook notifications for the meantime; it will just pile up in your Notification Center. There are apps that could help you with Facebook notifications. You could install one if you would prefer.
