Basic troubleshooting tips for Mac

Hi I'm an IT Tech, fairly new to Apple Mac, mainly experienced with Wintel products.

I have an interview for a new position which involves more Mac support.

I'd just like to know, for the technical part of my interview, if anyone can suggest what a few of the more common problems are that people experience with Apple Macs and how to troubleshoot them.

Thanks in advance

Paul

I have supported Macs and Windows systems in enterprise corporation for many years, heres my +/- $.02

Running an Anti-Virus Package on Mac

Here are the most important links you can have on hand when your Mac is behaving as if it has been infected with a Virus:

One word: Don't

Malware and Adware

Mac related Malware and Adware infections can usually be removed with Malwarebytes for Mac and/or Etrecheck which are two free utilities offered by contributors to this forum that do not stay resident and conflict with OS X.

Etrecheck may be the greatest support software for Mac ever, and it's free. You can learn more about a system in a single report than you could scouring that system for hours with a team of IT specialist.

Best Securities Policy

Keep the OS updated from Apple - anything else can be a disaster. Apple is not MS. When you get a securities update from Apple prepare for the vaguest description of what they did. MS would rather outline step-by-step what was fixed and how so you can just figure out another way to get past those precautions;

Apple: No joke; they don't even tell their employees exactly what was in those patches.

then reboot normally with devices disconnected.

Summed Up

Do not use a Windows solution or mindset for OS X. These are two entirely different OS's in their behavior and susceptibility to attacks and infiltration. Mac OS does not need 3rd party utilities to keep itself functioning, the findings on this forum have shown repeatedly these products cause far more problems than the purport to fix, AV products for Mac being the worst of offenders.

And before you need to ask if I'm one of those Apple Fan Boy IT guys, I am not. I keep my Win 7 installers in an airtight hermitically sealed container, it is for all my design work and 3D the most stable OS I have ever used and I went to college and became an Apple graphic designer for a few years before I landed in IT fixing System/OS X/Mac OS systems

Thanks for that JimmyCMPIT. Really useful. I owe you 2 cents

I take iTunes gift cards

good luck with your ventures. I've been supporting macs for years and in so I get to spend most of my 8-5 on this site or messing with Blender and pretending I'm checking compatibility or stress testing systems.

The Mac is not Windows mindset is key. Once you start admining these systems like Windows PC's expect problems, but it's not uncommon to be asked to migrate Macs into a Windows workflow and meet with resistance.

Read through the mac os x forums.  Looking at the titles should be enough.

The most common seems to be email doesn't work

"My mac has a virus."  Get real.  It doesn't.  In reality, the user installed some junk software or has a hardware problem. Run etrecheck to see what is on the machine.  I doubt many IT shops know about Etrecheck so be prepared to describe what Etrecheck does.

Become familiar with activity monitor.

PS.  JimmyCMPIT, that's the most concise list every!  Super Great!
