Every drive has to have some format, so I'm not sure what you're asking here. Not all formats allow Macs to write to them without additional software. The formats have limited on the file sizes. I'm afraid your question is a bit like asking how to cross a river without using a boat or bridge and not get your feet wet.

Maybe a fuller explanation of the problem might help. What format is the drive you want to copy too?
