mail can't verify the identity...

i have multiple email accounts on multiple domains (some that i own) and for years i was plagued by this error prompt on all or some of my accounts (IMAP accounts exclusively). the only way i was able to make it go away was by getting into mail folder (?) or some other location, double clicking (? or some other method) to access a certificate FILE and change a setting in the actual file.

if i did this from within the error prompt or within mail itself the issue never resolved.

anyone know how to tackle this and/or whether it is different in sierra? seems like i have been plagued by this error since leopard...

happens on gmail, icloud and other domains...
