why is Mail sending messages but nothing is in ...

My Mail says sending 58 of 63 messages, but there is nothing in any outbox. How can I clear this? Imac - El Capitan 10.11.06

The first thing you can do is re-build each mailbox. If you don't know how please read Rebuild mailboxes - Apple Support

But there is no outbox to rebuild in the sidebar!! The message that comes up is in the usual place at the bottom of the sidebar with all the mailboxes in, but there is no outbox to check.

Any ideas?
