back up/restore advice

i have an imac 8,1, it started out with someone else owning it and it ran something older than 10.5 (i dont know exactly what but it has microsoft apps, PowerPC stuff, and corrupted files still laying around), it clearly wasnt treated right as it was full of nasty files and random stuff thrown about with a decent amount of the hard drive filled with things i still cant find, when i got it i started to clean it up but quickly noticed that it will a hard task as i do not know what's really needed or if i will destroy it so i left a solid 100 GB (of my 300 GB drive) full of ???

after eventually running into the issue of no data and not knowing what to do, i proceeded to back up some stuff onto a USB and start the mac fresh, so it can really feel like my mac and no longer something someone had left sitting on a desk for 3 years so i ask this, where should i look for things that i cant replace (that i may like/need) and where is the best way to go for the OS? (im very stuck on mavericks, el capitan, or dual booting it with both) im just super unsure on what to do here as i mainly work on android devices and not macs so this is all kind of new to me... i really regret not resetting this thing when i found it

note my mom & i moved into this house, our roommate said the last person who we all actually know left the mac there, and he never bothered to touch it, it did appear that all personal stuff was removed from the mac, pictures, info, etc

If this is your iMac, you'll need the CDs that shipped with it originally to reformat and reinstall.

https://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac-core-2-duo-2.4-20-inch-alu minum-early-2008-penryn-specs.html

You may be able to order them from Apple or an AASP (Apple Authorized Service Provider) may be able to help. After that you can upgrade to 10.6.8 and then to El Capitan.

But before you upgrade to El Capitan you'll need to install more RAM, if it still has the 1GB it shipped with. It can take up to 6GB and I suggest you do that.
