Sierra and Java JRE 1.8.0

I just bought a brand new MacBook running Sierra. My work uses Java. I installed JRE 1.8.0_144-b01 but I'm getting a NullPointerException error, and the Java applet won't load.  Mac+ senior advisor tech support couldn't find a solution. I searched previous posts here, and I'm not seeing a solution.  I'm not using any keys like shift, etc. in my sign-on or password.  If this has been an issue since Sierra released last Fall, surely there's some type of fix by now???

You probably need the JDK. Get it from here
