connect Time Capsule to comcast xfinity router
we just upgraded our comcast service to include the phone service. when they installed it - they replaced the old cable modem with their xfinity router. since then, I am having major problems with wi-fi.
I have the xfinitity router connected via ethernet to my time capsule - which is connect to my iMac via ethernet. my wi-fi problems occur with every laptop, mobile device in the houe. the symptoms are that the wi-fi capability seems to come to a complete standstill. please note: the wi-fi problems occur regardless of which device you try to connect via wi-fi - the time capsule or the xfinity router. when these wi-fi problems occur i have no issues with a device directly connected via ethernet.
what do I have configured wrong?
Before the new Xfinity router, how was the Time Capsule configured?
What Time Capsule version/generation do you have?
The Router has DHCP functions and it is no longer a standard modem. You may have overlapping DHCP ranges configured on both the TC and the Router/WiFi which no longer will work.

Please check to verify that the Ethernet cable connects from a LAN <--> port on the Xfinity gateway to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule. To minimize the chances of wireless interference occurring between two access points, try to separate the Xfinity gateway and Time Capsule by 6-7 feet, or 2 meters. A greater distance would be better, if your Ethernet cable allows.
Since you have your iMac connected to the Time Capsule using Ethernet, temporarily power off all of your wireless devices.....laptops, mobile devices, etc.
On your iMac.....open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Assuming that you are using Lion, Mountain Lion or Mavericks on your iMac....
Click on the picture of the Time Capsule, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
(Post back for additional instructions if you are using the Leopard or Snow Leopard operating system on the iMac)
Click the Network tab at the top of the next window
Verify that the setting for Router Mode is set to "Off (Bridge Mode)"
If you have made any changes, click Update at the lower right to save the new settings and allow a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart
Power off the Xfinity gateway for a minute, then power it back up.
Try one wireless device on the Time Capsule network and then on the Xfinity network to verify that wireless is working.
If successful, continue to power up one wireless device at a time, checking as you go.
Please post on your results.
If the wireless issues continue, it will likely be necessary to turn off the wireless service on either the Xfinity gateway or the Time Capsule.
I verified the settings are as you described.
right now I have the 2 devices sitting next to each other. I will separate them and see if this works.
I see no easy way to turn off wifi on the xfinity router...
what are the implications of turning off the wifi on the time capsule? what functionality will I lose?
the time capsule used to be connected via ethernet to the cable modem.
no idea what version of time capsule - i think i bought it in 2008
how can i mitigate the overlapping DHCP issue?

The further apart they are, the better. Your friendly computer / electronics superstore has lots of different lengths (and colors) of cables. Be sure to get a CAT5e or CAT6 cable.

Look on the bottom of the gateway to see if they have the default IP address for the device listed. It is usually something like 192.168.0.1....for example only. Type that address into the address bar of your browser. The user name is usually "admin" and password is usually "password"....but you may need to check with Comcast for details.
Once you have the configuration page displayed, it is an easy matter to turn off the wireless service. Comcast could probably help over the phone for this as well.

You will have to connect through the Xfinity wireless. The Time Capsule becomes a basic hard drive when you turn off the wireless on the device.
how can i mitigate the overlapping DHCP issue?
There is no issue. That is why we wanted to verify that the Time Capsule was in Bridge Mode.
DHCP service is being handled only by the Xfinity gateway....which is what you want.
greatly appreciate everyone's assistance.
two last dumb question... how do i turn off the wireless on the time capsule (if it comes to that)
if i can successfully turn off the wi fi on the comcast router - do i need to change the DHCP settings on the time capsule?
how do i turn off the wireless on the time capsule
Open up AirPort Utility, click on the Time Capsule, and click Edit
Click the Wireless tab at the top of the next window
Change the setting for Network Mode to Off
Click Update and wait a minute for the Time Capsule to restart
If i can successfully turn off the wi fi on the comcast router - do i need to change the DHCP settings on the time capsule?
No, do not change anything on the Time Capsule except turning the wireless off if needed.
Short answer: call Comcast and tell them you want them to turn off the wifi on their router and turn it into a bridge modem so you can then use your Airport Time Capsule and your existing wifi network. It took a few calls and waiting around (that's comcast), but it worked for me.
Another dumb question: Is it better to use a 3+ year-old Time Capsule or newer Comcast/Xfinity modem for WiFi? You'd think newer = better, but then again it's Comcast...
Hi Bob,
i have the xfinity and time capsul, but back to my Mac does not work from outside the lan,
i tried both routers in bridge mode, but I can not access the TC Hardrive, nor my iMac,
can you help, please?
If you have tried the Xfinity in bridge mode and it will not allow Back to My Mac (BTMM) to operate correctly, then you will need to ask Xfinity if they can supply you with a simple modem instead of the modem/router that you have now.
A simple modem.....not a modem/router or gateway type of device......will allow the Time Capsule to operate as a router correctly, providing DHCP and NAT service for your network, which is what BTMM requires, so your chances of things working will improve using this type of modem. No guarantees though, there never are with Back To My Mac.
A simple modem will have only one Ethernet port....something like this for example:
Thank you Bob, i will contact Comcast, but i doubt they will send me a modem, is there any chance to get BTMM working by using port forwarding? Maybe at least for the Time Capsule only?
is there any chance to get BTMM working by using port forwarding?
I see nothing in Apple's support documents about this. I suppose that you could ask Apple, but I would be surprised if it was supported.
If your provider will not swap out your modem/router for a simple modem, and the BTMM feature is important to you, it will be time to look for another ISP.
