Mid 2012 MacBook Pro really slow

Hi all,

I have a mid 2012 macbook pro (on os sierra), and it's starting to really bug me, so don't know if its worth trying to update some things or just get a new one.

It's become very slow and laggy - doesn't like too much being open and running at once, can take a while to switch between things, can take AGES to open programs and even when trying to do things within programs I frequently get the spinning colour wheel. Itunes crashes regularly .. and other little things that annoy me. Other than that it all seems ok. I have started an online course so I need a reliable and FAST computer! I don't know too much about it, but I've read about a putting in a SSD as well as upgrading from 4gb to 8gb ram.

I've researched and tried all the usual things to try speed it up but nothing has worked. And I'm only at about 250 of the 500g available.

So is it worth trying to fix it? And more importantly will it work? Don't want to fork out a few hundred if it doesn't change anything. Also not fond of the idea of the over $1700 for a new one.. they sure have gone up a lot since I bought mine!

Have posted the hardware overview below incase it's relevant - no idea if it is! Any advice would be really appreciated.

Thanks!

Hello kjm85,

I wrote a little diagnostic program to help show what might be causing these problems. Download EtreCheck from https://www.etrecheck.com, run it, and paste the results here. EtreCheck is perfectly safe to run, does not ask for your password to install, and is signed with my Apple Developer ID.

Generally, you can't go wrong by adding an SSD and upgrading the RAM. There might be some other cause like a misbehaving system modification. Or your existing hard drive could be failing. EtreCheck will include a rough performance measure. If it says "below average" or "poor", then your hard drive could be dying.

Disclaimer: Although EtreCheck is free, there are other links on my site that could give me some form of compensation, financial or otherwise.

thank you! I ran it - doesn't look too good, but no idea what it all means:

EtreCheck version: 3.4.4 (448)

Try uninstalling your antivirus software and see if it improves. Apple includes antivirus capabilities  the operating system. Make sure to restart before testing again. If it doesn't get twice as fast, then I suggest upgrading your RAM and replacing your hard drive with an SSD.

thanks for the help and advice! Will try that
