How do I get iTunes to accept my SIM card?

and change the name of the owner of my phone?  Phone has been unlocked by original carrier, or so their msg to me states.  iTunes reads SIM Card not supported.   I got the SIM card two days ago.  I deleted the info on the phone and restored the phone with my old phone's information.  Should I backup the phone now with the SIM card removed? Go to Apple store or back to Verizon? 

When the carrier unlocks the iPhone, they provide instructions on how to complete the unlock.  This typically included restoring as new.
