High Sierra will not install, getting a host of...

I tried installing High Sierra. The download went fine. I started the install and went to sleep. I woke up to the computer in and endless cycle of restarting itself. I tried to boot with safe mode, but it will not work and will just restart again. Then I tried holding Command+R on restart. I clicked to reinstall the OS. It will download/install for about 2 hours and then say it cannot install. Then I opened the terminal and reset my date. Now when I try to reinstall the OS in recovery mode, It just gives the error "the recovery server could not be contacted" (even after switching to a difference band of my wifi and connecting with Ethernet cable). I can try restarting the computer now and get the error "the path /System/Installation/Packages/OSInstall.mpkg appears to be missing or damaged Quit the installer to restart your computer and try again".

Any ideas of what to do next? like an idiot I didn't back up anything and have important files on the HD. Also If anyone knows how to copy the contents of my Macintosh HD to an external drive using only Disk Utility, that would be extremely helpful.
