Using Ethernet for iPad

I need to reduce exposure to wifi, so I'm using an ethernet cable to USB adapter, plus camera adapter to lightning, to connect my iPad Air 2. Works great, and I can connect to internet fine, with wifi turned off in settings.

BUT.. Strangely, receiving my Gmail is sometimes spotty with Ethernet. Same with texting using Messages app, using my email address. When I toggle wifi back on, all the backed up emails come flooding in. But other times, emails and Messages come in just fine while connected to Ethernet. It's the same problem whether I use the Mail app, or other apps like the Gmail app or Inbox. ideas?
