Keyboard Language Indicator Popup
When switching keyboard input source the onscreen display showing input source no longer pops up on screen. Is there a way of getting this back?
No, I was answering this question because 1) it was never answered, and 2) if anyone was googling for the same issue, like I was, this discussion will pop up, and with the right answer. Two years, yes, but it has been answered.
Select "Show keyboard viewer" from the input menu.
Thanks for your extremely quick reply. The keyboard viewer is not really what I meant. There used to be a pop up box that appeared in the middle of my screen saying the language selected when switching between keyboard input sources. For example I would use a keyboard shortcut to switch input source and in the center of my screen would appear "British" or "Swedish" etc. Similar to how the indicators appear when chaning screen brightness or system volume.
I've never seen anything like that. Whatever language you've selected is checkmarked in the input menu — that's how you tell what is currently selected.

Does it really not show if you first hold down the Command/Apple key and then hold down the space key for a while? If not, try creating a new user account and see if it works again when logged into that.
I have tried holding down the key as you said and there is still no change. However, when attempting the same thing with a newly created user account it works in the new user account! Is there anyway I can get this working again in my original user account without creating a new user and copying accross all my files and applications?

This probably indicates that you have a bad .plist in Home/Library/Preferences for your main account. The problem is figuring out which ones to trash. You might try the ones with systemuiserver and hitoolbox in their names.
Thanks. I have deleted the .plist files you said and on reboot have to re-add the keyboard input again. However despite this the pop up display still does not appear. Are there any others that you suggest?
You could try moving all of them to the desktop (they should just get regenerated on a restart). The one .plist you may want to be careful of is that for Mail, which has all the username password and other server settings that could be a pain to redo.
I tried a reboot with all .plist files removed and still no luck. I am beginning to think it would be easier to just create a new account!

That is odd. Perhaps a cache file is causing problems. There are various apps that can clean caches, I think one is Onyx.
I have downloaded and installed onyx and run the clear cache scripts and automation and the problem is still there after a reboot unfortunately. Any other pointers?
Sorry, this one has me stumped.
What he's talking about, is this:
It's a transparent pop-up window that appears ONLY when Cmd + Space is hit. It took a couple clicks to turn it back on in Mountain Lion (10.8.2)--but it still exists.
What you have to make sure of, is that Spotlight is not currently using the shortcut, which it takes by default. When you enable more than one Input Source (in Language & Text), the shortcuts, seen here, become active:
However, you will ONLY, and I mean only, see the pop-up when you use the first shortcut--and Spotlight positively cannot be using the shortcut, or else it will show up as greyed out, like I said, by default.
TOODLES!!!!
Did you really mean to add a response to this discussion from 2 years ago? It sounds like maybe you were answering another more current question.
