New MacBook and external drive for iTunes

Our family's iTunes collection is on an external drive (we filled my 2011 MacBook Pro and needed more space).  We synced our devices weekly and never had a problem with iTunes not recognizing the external drive.

Fast forward to August of this year...my MacBook Pro has undergone major repairs twice and was nearing death.  I purchased a new MacBook Pro and moved over the bulk of files using my Time Capsule.  No problems.

Upon plugging in my external drive and attempting to use iTunes, I received the message: "The iTunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file."  After browsing many discussion groups, I figured out how to unlock not only this file, but the other files requiring unlocking by going go "Get Info" and changing user status to "read and write."  Once I did this, iTunes opened up and everything was there.  Yay!

To make sure this wasn't a fluke, I closed out of iTunes.  Upon re-opening and attempting to go to my external drive library, I received the message "The file "iTunes Library.itl" does not appear to be a valid iTunes library file.  iTunes has created a new iTunes library and renamed this file to "iTunes Library (Damaged)".  Then I get the spinning wheel of death after trying to click "OK," forcing me to have to do a Force Quit on iTunes.  I've tried two more times, pressing the Option key and when I try to select my iTunes library from the external drive, I still get the same message.

I realize that I can easily create a new library for all of the iTunes items I've purchased BUT we've been building this library for nearly a decade and it includes many movies from "back in the day" when you could get a digital download of the movie when you bought the blu-ray.  These won't move over as iTunes purchases.  Same with the music that we've burned onto the external drive for use on our devices.
