No more personal upgrades

Apple Inc. hit the last nail on the coffin with their idea to keep their customers from doing what they want with their own computers. I was looking to trade in my 2011 MBP for the new MBP with touch bar. I was eager to try out these new books until I did more research and realized that everything is soldered onto the logicboard. RAM, storage. I'm just blown away I hope Apple chooses to make these things removable and upgrade-able past purchase in their next line of notebooks, but for now I'm no longer a customer of the Macintosh line-up.

The primary reason for doing this has nothing to do with a conspiracy to keep you from upgrading on your own. (although conspiracy theories are more fun.)

The primary reason is that components that are NOT in sockets are substantially more reliable over the life-cycle of the product than those in sockets.

When Apple already includes enough RAM and provides a way to add more drives, the need to plug things into slots goes away. This makes lightweight, portable computers that run on batteries more robust and a better product.

If you want upgradeable, you can trade that for portability. Several desktop models still have slots and can be upgraded quite a bit more than their entry base models.
