when pluged in the ipad says "not charging"

ipad says "not charging" when plugged in, why

Plugged into the wall or via USB?

Using an ipad charger or an iPhone charger?

if you're plugging it into the USB and it says not charging, that's normal.

If you're using an iPhone charger then it's also normal because iPhone chargers don't put out enough power to keep the iPad happy.

Try a diffrent charger and see if that one works.  You may just not be using the right charger.

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.

Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.

How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery

https://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/

At this link https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. In rare instances when using the Camera Connection Kit, you may notice that iPad does not charge after using the Camera Connection Kit. Disconnecting and reconnecting the iPad from the charger will resolve this issue.

plug it directly into a power outlet

iPAD MINI WON'T CHARGE:

I just bought an iPAD Mini and it would not charge using the 2 piece power adapter with the USB socket when it was plugged it into a wall power socket.

No Charge at all.

SOLUTION:

So i had a another power adapter from my Nexus 7inch Tablet Version 2, with the USB Socket in it and when i replugged in the iPad Mini cable into that USB adapter and plugged into power socket on wall, the iPadMini charged perfectly up to the 100%

So in summary in my case, it was the actual Apple 2 Piece White Power Adapter with the USB Socket that was the problem. The Cables are fine.

So I just bought another single piece power adapter with the USB Socket and no more problems.

I have seen tens and tens of people with the same problem as well as 2 piece power adapters for smart phones as well. And a friend with a S3 Phone did exactly the same thing till i bought a single piece USB Power Adapter.

Alot of the Time it is the 2 Piece Power Adapters that are the problem. They are not very tightly fitted together and therefore they don't make the solid connection you need.

hope this helps anyone

cheers KiwiKev

Hi,

I have faced same problem with my new iPad Air. Thanks to all for your valuable inputs. I am new in iPad Air family. I have read all the comments regardin iPad Air charging with laptop USB port. So with all the comments, we shall conclude that iPad is not compatible to charge with laptop USB port.

STRANGE... It's one of the major short coming with iPad..

IPad 3 not charging. Original charger that have used daily.

Updated to iOS 7.1 last night. Bug in 7.1 perhaps?

Any ideas?

Have you tried to give it a reset? Hold down the sleep and home keys for about 20 seconds. When you see the silver apple, let go and let it reboot and see if it helps

This is a bug for sure. Did the update, now won't charge with same power adapter it came with (10v). Won't charge from computer. Plugged it into my Samsung (5v) charger and it has moved 7% charging. Did the reset, nothing.

If that isn't bad enough, apple makes it impossible to let them know THEY have a problem. So that's fun. Glad SO MANY are having this problem... Wish they had a place to report this and escalate it so they could fix it ASAP or sooner!

WILL NEVER BUY APPLE EVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also I always wait a long time to update. This time i decided to get it over with. Will NEVER update again until they fix the bugs to it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

its not about original charger you were using anymore, as you know apple has launched new 12w adaptar and they are recommending this new adapter to charge your I-pad now.

Apple knows how to make money, even from the sold products. REDICULUS> I am seriously thinking of leaving I-pad and go for samsung tablet. anyone with meeeeee..... please raise your voice against APPLE. What they are doing is called OPEN AIR BURGLARY DONE BY WHITE COLOUR PEOPLE in my country.

Please guys raise your voice or keep on paying what APPLE ask for

Same problem since the update, same charger same lead but will now not charge, just states "not charging" but get this the same charger and lead works on my iphone !

I had this same issue and tried everything. Reset, restore, direct to wall socket, turned off nearly every setting......none of it worked.

Bought a genuine Apple 12W charger and lead.....problem solved.

It's literally an Apple rip off to make you spend more money. The standard charger that comes the iPad is 10W, and the iOs7.1 update means your iPad now needs extra juice to power it.

I know it adds cost, but the solution does work.

You can then go back to loving your iPad again.

In case anyone else runs into this post as I did, I was having the same issue. iPad was charging from USB on a newer iMac but not on the provided 10W Adapter, or any 10W apple charger. I tried resetting, restoring, hard booting, everything I could within my power without physcally opening the thing. After reading Haseverynamegone's post I tried just out of curiosity a Samsung charger I had that's 12W, and it charged! I have since purchased a newer 12W Apple charger and the iPad is now happily chugging away.

So, my solution: Give Apple more money. Seems to be a recurring theme...

Android fan here using my first purchased iPad.  Just noticed that when I plug my new iPad mini into a USB port it says not charging even though it does charge. That is strange. Is this a hardware issue or is this the expected behavior.
