Macbookpro not connecting to HP Officejet 6950 ...

My macbook pro is not connecting to our new HP Officejet 6950 printer. I've tried everything I know how to do from disconnecting and deleting all the printers listed on my settings, to restarting my computer and printer, and trying to add it via the IP address. However, every time I do so it says that my laptop cannot connect to the printer at this time. When I tried to print after adding it via the IP address it just loaded forever and never actually printed. So my question is what else can I do to connect my mac to the printer? Do I need to update my mac? I'm currently running OS X Yosemite. I don't want to update my computer unless I have to because it is a few years old so I'm nervous the update might crash it. Please help!

Contact HP tech support for help. Be sure to find out if you need to upgrade the printer driver and OS X.
