How can I fix my iPad Pro magnet polarity so th...

hi! I got my new iPad Pro with a Smart Cover and an apple pencil, everything was fine until one day I notice that my Smart Cover stop sticking magnetically to the screen of the iPad, and when I look closer it was kind of floating, like if the magnet instead of attracting were repelling.

When I search for similar problems, I found that some iPads air have had the same problem and found that some people could fix it in some way moving around the Smart Cover in front and In the back of the iPad. It seems that the magnets are kind of loosen inside the iPad and something cause them to rotate and inverted the polarity. it makes sense because if I put the Smart Cover upside down with the furry side in the outside it seems to work and attract correctly.

I also went to a mac store and try with other smart covers, the problem seems to be in the iPad Pro and not in the Smart Cover, because the Smart Cover with other iPads Pros Work fine. But my iPad Pro with other smart covers still has the problem.

I want to know if there is a way to revert the problem without having to leave the iPad in the store, because it's not an Apple Store is a reseller, which I need to wait more time in order to get it fixed!

HI Black Duke

I have just noticed the exact same issue with my iPad pro. I got it at Christmas . It's has had very light use. Not been out of the house once, as I didn't have a back cover and didnt wish to risk scratching my new toy. I also bought an apple branded front screen cover with ipad pro at Christmas.

I noticed problem you described when I plugged it into charge with the apple adaptor about 5 hours ago (I live in UK)

I phoned up apple support . They had not heard of the issue and seemed to think it comical. Personally I'm disappointed . Ive always enjoyed treating myself to Apple products over last few years but am wondering if the quality of product manufacture may have slipped. I've owned two iPhones one iPod, the original iPad and an iPad mini 2, all still work.

I was told even though I had bought the iPad pro online via Apple, that I would have to go to an Apple Store. Which isn't convenient.

Just in case you think it's your screen cover that's at fault, I can assure you that is unlikely, in this instance. My son has an iPad pro he won in competition and he also has an  Apple front cover for his ipad pro. His cover does not work either on my iPad pro. It just hovers about 1cm approx away from tablet. Like it's being repeled. I've not had the ipad pro near any techie equipment its just been sitting on my leather sofa or upstairs on a chair by my bedside. It's not been knocked, bumped or dropped. In fact it looks as good as new.

Im going to phone the Apple Store and then get a replacement unit because I'm suspicious as to the quality of a product that could be treated so gently and still develop this odd fault.

KInd Regards

LIsa (UK)

Hi !

I have the exact same issue with iPad Pro and the Smart Cover...

I'm about to contact support for this soon.

Really disappointing.

I'm looking for a solution too.

have the same problem too

it suddenly happened, the smart cover stopped sticking on my ipad pro

i called online support but did not get a solution

anyone could help this?

If your talking about the Smart case for the iPad Air 2 and you're using that on the iPad Pro, this is because the polarity in the iPad Pro is different then in the iPad Air.  I was upgrading at the Apple Store and talked to one of the reps while I was there asking if I could use it she stated right away that it will fit, but the magnet polarity was different so things would have to be adjusted to make it work right.  I ended up just getting the Smart Cover and Silicone back as two separate pieces to make my own Smart case and it has worked flawlessly.

the smart cover is for ipad pro and i bought in brand new condition a week ago. everything was perfect before until today i found my smart cover did not snap to ipad

I just test my ipad pro with another cover and still can not snap to it, so i think the problem is on magnetic sensor in my ipad pro, the magnet could be loose because i heard something moving within my ipad pro when i move the cover

I have a similar issue.

The cover does not snap-shut properly on the right face of the iPad but "hovers" slightly, being repelled by the magnets in the iPad. The cover itself works fine on a friend's iPad pro, but not on mine, nor does the friend's iPad cover work on mine.

Something seems to have happened to the magnets in the iPad Pro.

But I have not read of any way that this can be solved through "remagnetizing" the iPad. Curious though...

I have the same problem.  I took my iPad Pro to an Apple Store and they told me it would cost $600 to fix the issue.  I have the 32gb wifi model which costs $800 brand new. That's what I get for supporting Apple and buying my iPad Pro at launch. I am 2 months out of warranty and the only thing they told me at the Apple Store is that I should have paid extra for Apple Care.  What a joke.  I am very disappointed in Apple at their non response to the issue.  They know their is a problem, but every time I talk to someone with the company they act like they have never heard about it.  Apparently, they don't check the forums.

Same here. I use my iPad Pro on a daily basis in the office since over a year. I recently recognized the same issue. I guess one year of wear and tear loosened up the 'hinge' enough that the cover has some play. So it still snaps on but about 10 degrees out off angle (rather than floating in the correct position).

I don't know exactly when that happened, but it happened very quickly over a period of less than two weeks , if not over night. However, there was no specific event (impact, drop etc.) that could have caused this.

The ONLY covers that will work on the iPad Pro without causing that problem are the Apple branded Smart Covers.  They cost $49. Even tho the 9.7" iPad Pro is the same size as the iPad Air 2, that cover will float around on the IPP due to the magnets being in different places.  So thank you Apple for rewarding your customers!

Not true, alas  - I have this exact issue on the 12.9" iPad Pro, with a genuine Apple Smart Cover - the 10 degree offset and floating open position started about a week ago...  Bit disappointing.
