All apps quit after upgrading to Sierra!

Please help me.  I have been trying to fix this problem for 2 days.  I work from home, so this is crippling for me.  After upgrading to Sierra (10.12.6) from Mavericks (10.9.5), I have the following problems:

1.  Pretty much every application with a search field (e.g., Finder, Safari, MS Word, Activity Monitor, System Preferences, Terminal, etc.) quits immediately after I type into the search field.  In the case of Safari, it quits immediately after I click in the search/address field.  I don't even have a chance to type anything.  In all cases, the standard "XYZ quit unexpectedly" window appears for every app that quits.

2.  Quitting also occurs when I try to print (from menu or keyboard) and upon various other actions.

3.  The "Messages" application crashes immediately after I try to start it up.  The standard "Messages quit unexpectedly" window appears.

4.  The "Notification Center" icon in the menubar does not do anything -- except flash -- when I click on it.

5.  The Spotlight icon in the menubar repeatedly "flashes" in and out, as if it is in a never-ending load/crash cycle.  I finally decided to kill all Spotlight indexing via Terminal.  That got rid of the flashing Spotlight icon, but now I have no Spotlight indexing (which is not acceptable) and it did not fix any of the other problems.

NOTES:

A.  When I log-in as "Guest User," everything is fine.  No problems at all.

B.  When I restart while holding down the shift key ("Safe Mode") in order to disable all log-in items listed in System Preferences, it makes no difference.

C.  I have a 2009 iMac that was also running Mavericks (10.9.5).  I upgraded that machine to Sierra (10.12.6) last week, with no problems at all.  In fact, I am using that machine to type this post.

D.  My problematic machine's specs:

iMac 27" (Late 2012)

3.4 GHz Intel Core i7

32 BG Ram

Thank you very, very much!

Michelle

Also, none of my custom folders in the Finder's sidebar were carried over in the upgrade.
