undelivered emails, while at icloud storage limit

I received the dreaded warning about approaching the 5GB limit on iCloud Storage, that quickly that became a message saying the limit had been met and no email could be received or sent. I have managed the storage down easily enough, but I have a 14 hour period when no emails were delivered - my question is, what happened to that undelivered email - was it stored somewhere safe in the shiny new Apple HQ and will arrive in my Inbox sometime soon ? .. or did it go down the Apple blackhole, never to be seen again?
