Option to disable iTunes volume control for rem...
I have noticed that with iTunes 10, the option to disable the volume control for remote speakers seems to have disappeared from Preferences>Devices. If you click the "?" button, the help window gives an explanation of what its for but the option to check/uncheck it clearly isn't there. Since iTunes 10, streaming my music from my iMac to my Denon receiver via Airtunes/Airplay with an Airport Express has been disappointing. The volume is far too low. With version 9 and every version prior, the volume control option was always there in preferences and I always had it disabled; music came through loud and clear but since this option appears to no longer exist, the volume through the Denon receiver fails to impress, even with the iTunes volume slider at max.Anyone else noticed steaming volume too low? If so, agree that it's a bug?

There option has changed to "Allow iTunes control from remote speakers", but it does not seem to work the way the previous option "Disable Volume control" worked. In fact, I am not sure HOW it works, as toggling it did not seem to change the system behavior. The "Help", as of two nights ago, still referred to the old option.
I use the Remote App to stream to an AE, and find that the volume control accessible via the Remote App now raises and lowers the volume from my AE, even when using the digital out.
The good news is that when the volume control is at maximum, it appears that the AE outputs a full range signal the same as when the previous option for "Disable..." was checked.
That said, I would much prefer to have the old option back.

Have either of you notice the music quality take a dip on iTunes 10? Maybe it's just my ears today, but it sounds a little 'flat' even with the iTunes volume set to max. I also used to disable the volume control to reduce the amount that my computer interferes with the sound before it gets to the external DAC.
Trouble is of course that iTunes 9 has now gone so I can't do a back to back listen!
I wholeheartedly agree with "I also used to disable the volume control to reduce the amount that my computer interferes with the sound before it gets to the external DAC." There is no reason why Apple shouldn't restore this important setting option as the volume control does negatively affect sound quality in a high-end set-up and we'd rather not just take their word for it that the volume control's maximum setting is the same as disabling it. Why does the volume slider change the output level even when using the Airport Express' digital output? It shouldn't, and it seems the sound is now being force sent through a stupid digital volume control for no good reason. If for no other reason the "disable" option should be restored to avoid inadvertent volume changes via the Remote app for iPod Touch and iPhone. Strangely as compared to several other posts here, my perceived volume level now seems louder than before, not softer as others are reporting. People that are serious about sound quality do not want iTunes or AirPlay (formerly AirTunes) to manipulate the volume level or any other aspect of the sound at all ever, as it can't help but only hurt. I also thought the "disable" setting was available in the Airport Utility previously, but it's vanished from there too.
While I never really used the disable volume control feature, I definitely noticed a serious loss of maximum output when using my wireless speakers in iTunes 10.
The output directly from my computer doesn't seem to have changed (through headphones for example), but in iTunes 10, even with the iTunes volume at its maximum setting, I have to turn my stereo volume (connected to an airport express) way higher than I ever did before to get even close to iTunes 9 (or previous) levels.
This is incredibly disappointing and I hope Apple will fix it quickly...
I just noticed the same problem. I have tried everything and no relieve.
Anyone got an answer
Same problem for me. Was trying to listen to tunes out by the pool all weekend and had to crank the volume way beyond where it should be.
Apple please fix this soon!!
Same low volume problem for me. I just upgraded to iTunes 10 and immediately noticed it. I have to turn up the amplifier much higher than normal, so much that there must be a significant loss of quality. No other source in my system needs so much amplification. Apple, please fix this right away!!
Joy! I think I figured it out, at least on my Windows version. In the Multiple Speakers dialog box, there is now a Master Volume and individual volume controls for each set of speakers. When I brought up the dialog for the first time just now, the individual volumes were set very low by default (I have two Airport Express units). It's easy to increase the individual volumes until they "lock" with the Master Volume. If I set them lower than the Master, they move proportionally when I adjust the Master. Also, the actual volume coming out of my speakers sounds the same as before version 10. I hope this works the same on the Mac version.
I discovered that when you select multiple speakers from the button on the far lower right side of the iTunes window, there are new options in iTunes 10 that allow you to adjust the relative levels of each speaker output. In my case, the remote speakers were set much lower than the computer speakers, keeping the remote speakers at a reduced volume even when the master iTunes volume was at maximum. Adjusting this seems to have solved my problem with the volume.
Actually a pretty sweet feature. But it would have been nice to know about it before I spent a few days really hating the new iTunes...
If you script your AirTunes, don't bring the volume down below about 5 before shutting down iTunes or the remote speaker volume is no longer tied to the master volume. If you do, the next time you start iTunes, both volumes will be at 0 and the remote speaker will not increase in volume with the master volume as directed to by the script. A "helpful" new feature.
Not a sweet feature at all. It means that you can blow out your stereo if you turn the volume up there, then increase it in iTunes.
Apple needs to restore this critical feature - I want itunes screwing up the volume on my remote speakers.
Wow. Sound quality to my AirTunes in iTunes 10 is poor. Whereas before there was only a slight difference between CD input and AirTunes, now it's perceptible. In addition to the volume problem described above, there's a quality problem: sound is muddy, there's background noise, etc. Is iTunes 10 using some sort of compression that affects music quality?
I'm disappointed.
Interesting. I can at least answer the volume control thing.
In what is (IMHO) a really weird and bad GUI decision, they decided to ALWAYS link the master volume of iTunes to all speakers, but hide secret volume controls under the "Multiple Speakers" popup.
Go to the Speakers popup in the bottom right corner of iTunes & select Multiple Speakers. You will now see a "Multiple Speakers" popup, with individual volume controls for each system and a Master Volume slider. Set the stereo speaker to maximum and you can now hear it fairly well from your living room stereo again. (It still seems slightly more compressed to me?)
The real gotcha though: any time you try and use the main speaker volume control or any 3rd party volume control software (Synergy) or the iPhone Remote software, it adjusts the Master Volume, which effs up your living room volume.
Hoping like **** they revert from this wretched festering pile of badness soon...
I'm with Mikey. It would be ideal to be able to disable volume interference for a given airport. For example, I have 3 airports. One to a medium quality kitchen stereo where I use analog output, one to my deck where I also use analog, and one to my Naim Audio DAC (high end). I would like to retain volume control for kitchen and deck, but elimintate the itunes processing on my Naim DAC.
Hey -- apple engineers -- listen up!
