Software Update needed but not available

I have OS X mountainlion 10.8.5  I need to update to the latest version.  When I check for software updates it tells me there are non available, but nearly all my apps and programs tell me I need 10.9 or later.  My iPhoto is having a lot of trouble connecting to my iPhone.  I have iPhoto11 9.4.1, I don't know how to update that either, if I can at all.

To help, we need to know the sub-model of your computer. Some MacBook Pros are hardware-constrained to running only older versions of the system software. Please do "About this Mac" to get this window in OS 10.8:

Yours will, of course, say "MacBook Pro" but it is the second line that I've indicated with the red arrow that is the important sub-model.

Please post the sub-model name (no serial numbers please) and from there we can best advise you on an upgrade path.
